Most MOV files, whether from an iPhone, a Mac or a camera, already contain H.264 or HEVC video, which is exactly what MP4 holds. Locavert checks the streams and, when they fit, copies them into an MP4 container without re-encoding. A 300 MB clip finishes in about a second and loses no quality at all.
When the streams do not fit, for example a WebM or an old AVI, MP4 is not offered for that file: Locavert deliberately ships no H.264 encoder, which keeps it free of GPL and patent-encumbered code. Choose WebM instead and the video is re-encoded on your device. Either way the video never leaves your machine, and it works on any computer or phone with a modern browser, not only on Apple devices. The video tools download once, about 25 MB, and you are asked first.
